introduction

‘To think of place as an intersection – a particular configuration of happenings – is to think of place in a constant sense of becoming through practice and practical knowledge. Place is both the context for practice and a product of practice – something that only makes sense as it is lived’ Tim Cresswell

place. is a visual art research centre in issues of place, location, context and environment. Through its projects and programmes, research and partnerships, place. addresses recent progressive theorisations of place – as event in process, as produced and producing – through a consideration of contemporary visual art. Led by researchers at Bristol School of Art, Media and Design, place. is committed to investigating, testing, imagining and analysing the following fields of research: commissioning and curating in and out of place; site-specificity and situated practices; urban and rural geographies; interdisciplinary approaches to urban renewal and the environment; memory, place, and identity (including issues of commemoration and conflict).
